O n May 11 2020, the crypto world experienced the phenomena knows as Bitcoin halving . For those who are still a little looney-toons regarding this phenomena, here's the lowdown . Moral of the story is that, as the Bitcoin supply decreased and it's 21 million market cap slowly approached, it was widely accepted that the low supply and high demand will increase the price of the cryptocurrency back to its previous highs. Basic business right? Wrong! Source: Equity Trust Company BTC prices actually fell and after briefly holding steady, are only just rising above the 10000 USD range. Surprise eh? Well, we are not done yet. Because while the most valuable crypto coin wasn't showing it's expected gains, some other cryptocurrencies shot to outer space. There was no SpaceX rocket nor a Tesla Roadster involved. These "altcoins" bumped up in their market value thanks to the entire underlying system of cryptocurrency: investor speculation. But what exactly are these ...
This list is in no particular order
1. Mercedes AMG Project One wearing zebra undies in the UK
The flagship car of the Mercedes Group, the AMG Project One was caught pants down, roaring its way around German companies UK test site. Built to combat the increasing number of supercar/hypercar from its revenue hurting rivals, the Project One is set to slot one step above the AMG GT providing much better performance which naturally comes at a price. And even if you do have the money, you have to prove you have owned over 20 + Mercedes cars in your lifetime. Much selective, But we like. Other camo covered cars are the next-gen Audi R8 and the 600 + hp BMW X6 M.
2. God Of War get beaten by your friendly neighbourhood SpiderMan
Sadly I don't live in New York. Nor have I been bitten by a spider. Nor do I have a PS4. But about 4.3 million people with PS4's ( obviously) have now become part of the Spidey Gang. 3.3 million copies sold in 3 days with another 1 million pre-orders. The web spinner has soundly beaten the previous record-holder God Of War who still had an astounding 3.1 million sales in 3 days. As an Xbox owner, I have never felt so envious.
3. Liverpool drub PSG, Man City stumble to a French defeat,
The Champions league began the last week with saucy tie between PSG and Liverpool, last season's finalist. Despite probably having one of the most expensive squads on Planet Earth, PSG were humbled by the likes of 19 year old Alexander-Arnold and a very old James Milner ( he looks old). And this was despite Salah even forgetting his scoring boots. Meanwhile, in Manchester, Lyon walked away to a 2-1 win against a spineless City side while their crosstown rivals United began their European travails with their young guns thrashing the Swiss Young Boys ( 3-0).
4. .....while a 33-year-old man cries
As Pep Guardiola helplessly watched from the stands in Manchester, Ronaldo's return to Spain lasted a measly 30 mins as he was given a straight red card for pulling a Valencia players' hair. While video replays showed little to no hair pulling the referee was adamant. Seriously ref even if it was a foul a yellow card would have sufficed.
5. Hurricane Florence abates but devastates Carolina
Hurricane Florence has now killed over 35 people with a staggering 27 in North Carolina, 6 in South Carolina and 2 in Virginia. The death toll could rise to 37 as there were 2 more females declared dead. 3 children are said to be among the deceased along with an estimated 1.7 million chickens, a number which could rise further as there is heavy flooding and feed trucks are unable to get to isolated farms. Rest In Peace poor souls.
6....As Typhoon Mangkhut eviscerates Hong Kong, China and the Philippines
One of the most powerful typhoons in recent years, Mangkhut has been destroying buildings, throwing people, and swaying skyscrapers with its high wind speeds. 74 people have been killed in the Philippines with 4 more in China. The Typhoon which even peaked to an equivalent of Category 5 hurricane has made millions of people evacuate. Rest In Peace poor souls
7. Korea's have discussions over denuclearisation as well as Kim's predicted travails to South Korea.
Both Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong Un have had constructive talks to build a more peaceful inter Korean relationship with Moon even saying Kim wants another US-North summit and urging to officially end the Korean War. Kim has also been emphasising on his denuclearisation prospects which would hopefully have a better effect on the Asian economy as tensions simmer towards a more wholesome peace in the Pacific. It remains to be seen what the US and its allies make of this as the denuclearisation plans are considered to be vague at best. Still, it is a step in the right direction and that must be commended.
8. Mercedes and Audi begin their respective EV battles
Watching Tesla achieving dominance ( sorta) in the US market has perked both the German rivals to join into the EV ( electrical vehicle) fray as both try to attract more environmentally conscious buyers who want something different than the Californian car company. Both have a claimed 250 mile or so range and both are SUV's with loads of tech and the sort of refinement you expect from the German luxury car brands.
9. Anthony Joshua defends his titles in showdown clash with Alexander Povetkin
A hard right hand and effortless left hook and Russian Povetkin was down as the 28 year old Joshua retained his IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight world titles. While Alexander did give Anthony a bloody nose job ( geddit?), the British boxer soon began to assert himself and, perhaps spurred by the fact that the fight was in his home ( country) and Povetkin was 11 years older, soon clinched victory in the 7th round of their bought. A win has made sure Joshua remains unbeaten in all his 22 matches having gained a significant 21 knockouts.
10. 29 dead in Iran and 12 crew members taken captive in Nigeria
29 people were ruthlessly killed with around 50 more injured as gunmen opened fire on a Military Parade in Iran. The state news agency said a women and child were among the children and also claimed that "four or five terrorists were gunned down by police". About 5,300 kilometres away 12 of 19 crew members aboard the MV Glarus, carrying wheat between Lagos and Port Harcourt, were kidnapped by pirates. Kidnapping and ransoming has become a significant issue in Nigeria and is bound to grow as the nation's oil becomes more and more valuable. Rest In Peace poor souls.
