O n May 11 2020, the crypto world experienced the phenomena knows as Bitcoin halving . For those who are still a little looney-toons regarding this phenomena, here's the lowdown . Moral of the story is that, as the Bitcoin supply decreased and it's 21 million market cap slowly approached, it was widely accepted that the low supply and high demand will increase the price of the cryptocurrency back to its previous highs. Basic business right? Wrong! Source: Equity Trust Company BTC prices actually fell and after briefly holding steady, are only just rising above the 10000 USD range. Surprise eh? Well, we are not done yet. Because while the most valuable crypto coin wasn't showing it's expected gains, some other cryptocurrencies shot to outer space. There was no SpaceX rocket nor a Tesla Roadster involved. These "altcoins" bumped up in their market value thanks to the entire underlying system of cryptocurrency: investor speculation. But what exactly are these ...
1. Another Hurricane. Another tragedy.
18 people were claimed by Michael, as the Hurricane ravaged the Florida Panhandle region with desperate people also resorting to looting. The toll is unfortunately expected to rise as many people are still unaccounted for, with heavily waterlogged regions like Panama City having lost most if not all communication channels. Many of the nearby region's farmland has been shredded by the disaster. This hurricane is one of many who have been devastating the US as well the Pacific islands and are no doubt due to 'Global Warming' fueling its way across the world. In other disasters, Bali was rocked by a 6.0 magnitude earthquake, leaving a reported 3 dead. The quake struck just a few hours after many of South East Asia's world leaders arrived for an IMF summit. RIP.
2. Google to shut down Google +
Well, not many people use Google + anymore ( even Google says that 90 % of users log in for an average of only 5 seconds) but due to massive security concerns, Google has decided to shut down its Facebook-esque service. While such concerns were perceived to be remedied earlier in March 2018, however, the flaw still remained so the decision to shut down the consumer version was undertaken. Perhaps keen to avoid a Zuckerberg like grilling, Google is also said to be updating its Gmail User Data policy and possibly update their search engines as well. It is estimated that about 10 months will be needed to completely shut down Google +
3. Climate Change scientists giving a bone-chilling outlook
Yes, Hurricanes do happen in the Pacific, but one cannot deny that the past weeks have been surprisingly stacked with disaster after disaster. Typhoons in the east, Hurricanes in the west. Drylands, forest fires, and literally every month is beating the previous months temperature records. We are in a crisis and according to a no-bullshit report by the UN, we Homo Sapiens have only 12 years to ensure that max temperature rise doesn't deviate above 1.5 Celsius. Only 12 bloody years, for us humans to clean up our act, because if we don't expect more disasters like Hurricanes, wildfires, droughts, and intense poverty and health issues, all of which are dialled up to 11. Ice caps are already melting, heat-related deaths are already rising, oceans are losing oxygen and becoming more acidic. Its time to act now.
4. Ronaldo gets embroiled in rape allegations.
EA and Nike are "very concerned". So are many of Ronnie's fans after cops reopened a case for the 'apparent' rape of a woman in a Las Vegas hotel in 2009. The Juventus has previously been accused of tax evasion but this a new level for Ronnie himself, so much so that Cristiano himself proclaimed that it (rape) was against the Portuguese's star very conscience. While an alleged settlement was made a few years ago, Ronnie and his batch of lawyers claim it was completely consensual. The allegations are seriously damaging Ronaldo's image. Even Juventus's stock fell by 10 % after the team backed Ronaldo. We are pretty sure Gianni Agnelli and his family can deal with a slight stock drop but if the team's star gets convicted, its pretty much game over for poor Ronaldo.
5. #unteilbar (indivisible) attracts thousands of people in Germany
The unteilbar movement attracted a reported 240,000 people in a classic anti-racism march in Berlin, Germany. While the organisers only expected 40.000 or so people in the march against the Anti-immigration Alternative for Germany party, 'several thousand' more showed up, showcasing placards like 'No to Nazis'. There is a growing concern over xenophobic incidents in the country, especially after refugees were attacked for the alleged murder of a German man.
6. Thierry Henry becomes the new manager of Monaco
After a string or rather a mountain load of poor results Monaco chiefs sacked head coach Leonardo Jardim and replaced him with the relatively inexperienced Thierry Henry. While Jardim's sacking is hard to justify, what with Monaco chiefs selling their top talent almost every year leaving the squad lacking star quality, Henry's assignment will mean he will face his former Arsenal teammate in Patrick Vieira, who is the head coach of Nice. Thierry Henry was the right-hand man for Belgium's coach Roberto Martinez in Belgium's scintillating run to the World Cup semifinals, only to lose to eventual winners France. While he was expected to take charge of Aston Villa, the Frenchman had decided he wanted to start in his home country and et voila. If you are not aware Monaco was where Henry's career began and Monaco was also coached by former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.
7. Turkish authorities have alleged recordings of Jamal Khashoggi slaying
Khashoggi is a popular man. A writer, who was well known for being a critic of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman vanished after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. A newspaper in Turkey claims that the local authorities have recordings of Jamal being killed, due to him being Apple Watch user. Saudi Arabia say that the allegations are 'baseless'. However, the newspaper also claims that Saudi officials tried to wipe away any recordings.
8. 7 people dead in a suicide bombing in Somalia
A suicide bomber blew himself to smithereens, killing seven people in the process, in a restaurant in Baidoa, Somalia. While there is no claim from any militant group authorities will probably not rule it out as a terrorist attack as there was a second explosion in a hotel in Baidoa which left 9 wounded
( by a grenade). Parts of Somalia are still presided by the al-Shabab group. The blasts came also, perhaps coincidentally, the day before a 1 year anniversary for a truck bombing in Mogadishu. The truck bombing is the deadliest ever in Somalia, killing over 500 people.
9. The Paris Motor Show
One of the biggest and best-known motor shows on Planet Earth, the Paris motor show showcased several concepts, electric vehicles as well consumer-oriented SUV's and sedans. The biggest attraction was the Peugeot's E-Legend stand and Ferrari's SP1 and SP2 Monza stands. BMW also released its all-new 3 series. While many big-name companies like Volkswagen, Bugatti, McLaren, Bentley were conspicuously absent, the local boys had a more favourable viewership as Renault showcased its nearly production-ready electric SUV alongside a swanky autonomous luxury concept saloon. VinFast, Vietnam's first local car company also debuted on the show attracting many viewers
(maybe because David Beckham was there himself).
10. Trump has a busy week
Meeting Kanye West must have been something for the real-estate magnate. 'Ye' has been acting up pretty bonkers lately, and seeing him run for President in 2024 may have been big bummer for Donnie. Trump also met with Andrew Brunson, a US pastor freed from Turkey after he was arrested over his alleged links to political groups which took part in a failed coup attempt on Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. While Trump will thank Recep here, he is still stuck in a dangerous triangle between Saudi Arabia and Turkey. While Saudi and Turkey have had cordial relations and Trumps coming to power has led to increasingly happy times between the Saudi's and the US, Turkey and Saudi's are now pretty strained over the Jamal Khashoggi disappearance in a Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.
